A week ago, Kyle had his tonsils out! I know - I know this is a procedure that is usually reserved for youngsters, but Kyle has always been young at heart! The doctor said his tonsils were HUGE and were the reason that he had so much trouble breathing. (They were aalmost touching in the back of his throat) I remembered Kyle getting his adnoids out when he was 4, but the doctor discouraged a tonsilectomy. It must have been an era when doctors did that sort of thing because his were still lodged in his throat until last week. The surgery went well, but recovery has been long and arduous. Not to mention down right painfull (for him) and heart wrenching (for me). 8 days later Kyle is just starting to speak and swallow again. He is trying to stifle the almost 20 pound weight loss incident he has experienced. It's hard to eat when your throat is all cut up and burned back together. So I try to concentrate on the happy news which is that he is recovering - all-be-it at a snails pace. Hopefully by next weekend he can actually eat something that isn't 90% liquid or frozen. Were shooting for some mashed potatoes. Wish us luck!
In celebration of the removal of Kyle's tonsils, Brian ran his first 5K! I was so proud of him. And actually we have Kyle and Bryce to thank. They and their wives are training to run 4 legs of a 31 miler in August, and they needed a 5th person. They got their persuation skills out and cooerced Brian to run a leg of the event as well. So this 5K was just a precursor to that race. Brian's goal was to keep moving. I just wanted him to survive! Celeste and I met him at the halfway mark and stood next to the EMT with her defibrillator. Just when we thought he had fallen, stopped to talk or taken a wrong turn, sure enough - around the bend he came! Breathing like a trooper! When he finished he was pleased with his performance and we were overjoyed he made it! Then they announced the winners and he placed 3rd for his age division! Woo-Hoo! Since his age division was 41 - 50, I told him next year I expected him to get 1st place since he will be the youngest in his age group! He thought that was hilarious!
